But they never did come home, did they?
Theodore Remus Lupin, a healthy, beautiful baby boy was born to Remus and Nymphadora Lupin in less than happy times. But he brought his parents great happiness before their ends, with his smile and his laugh, the way he refused to sleep peacefully unless both his parents had tucked him gently into bed. He took after his mother, mostly, inheriting her morphing abilities, her laugh, her fondness for doing things her own way. But there was Remus in him, too, in his eyes, and in his soul. Deep within Teddy, in his quieter times, there was Remus. Both his parents would always be there.
Until, suddenly, they weren't.
They were killed in the final battle for the wizarding world; killed, murdered... But they died a hero's death. A death to be proud of, if it is possible to take pride in such a macabre reality. Teddy was too young to understand the valiance in it, the bravery, honor. All he knew was that suddenly, inexplicably, his parents stopped tucking him in at night.
Harry Potter had been appointed Teddy's godfather, but Teddy lived with his grandmother now. Andromeda was a kind woman who cared deeply for Teddy, and empathized with him, for not only was it his mother who was killed, but her daughter. They had a terrible commonality between them, but Andromeda refused to let Teddy's life be dictated by grief. So she loved him, as much as if she was his own parent.
So Teddy grew up with hardly any of his own memories of his parents. Everything he heard were stories, or saw were pictures, or read were journals. His parents, these people... They sounded lovely, and courageous, but Teddy never knew them. And maybe it was a good thing, they thought, his grandmother and Harry. Maybe it was good that he know the truth, but not remember them. Because then he could make new memories.
Teddy's childhood was by no means unhappy. He was the center of attention, being the first born to the generation after the marauders, and the famous Harry Potter's godson. And, oh, he was adorable - unable to control his hair or eye color, he'd wake up looking entirely different from when he went to bed in the morning, and they all thought it precious... But of course it meant they would have to be very careful taking him out around Muggles until he could get a handle on his morphing. He was only a toddler still, of course, and he had plenty of time to learn. Who could teach him, though?
Teddy turned three years old and Fleur and Bill's daughter Victoire was born. She was a stunning baby when she was born; all golden hair and cobalt eyes and very much a veela. All Teddy knew, however, was that now he'd have to share the attention when the family got together at the burrow.
He found, though, that he didn't mind. She was little more than a baby then, and he no more than a toddler, but the two made fast, inseparable friends. A slew more god-cousins were born while Teddy grew up between his grandmother's and the Potter's house, but none of them would take the place of Victoire. The two went everywhere together, had secret words and secret hideouts, special handshakes and all the little things that went along with childhood, and it was wonderful. Andromeda was so pleased to see Teddy growing up so well, so happy. She could explain about his parents later.
And then later came. Teddy was spending as much time at the Potter's as he was at home with his grandmother, and Andromeda figured Teddy was treating Harry as the father he never had, and she was glad for it. But the boy should know about his parents, right? She was only doing what was best for her grandson, right? She presented Teddy with a stack of journals and photos, some Nymphadora's, some Remus's. She explained about the Dark Lord, and his parents, and Harry Potter, and the final battle. She explained everything.
Suddenly, Teddy wasn't so sure about Harry Potter anymore.
The boy with the funny colored hair was suddenly very aware of his last name.
Lupin. Lupin, he remembered, not
Potter. Not
Weasley. Teddy was sure now that he didn't belong to this family, and that this man he'd come to know as a father, was no such thing.
He resented him for it. And... Well, everything sort of changed after that.
Teddy used to be a good boy, one who listened and paid attention and set the table for dinner. He minded his god-cousins when the adults were busy, and played fair and all sorts of good boy things. He didn't feel like being such a good boy any more. Now, he just wanted to be a
Lupin, and he had to figure out what the meant for himself.
By this time, Teddy had already shown signs of magic and been sent his Hogwarts letter. He arrived at the station on September the first, his hair a screaming violet and his eyes a brilliant, nervous yellow. What did Hogwarts mean to him? It was a chance to figure himself out, away from the real or imagined pressure of his family, away from expectations, away from constant reminders. Here, he could connect with parents personally. Here, he could lash out, break rules, start fights. Here, he wasn't a good boy. Maybe it was experimenting. Growing up. Puberty. Hormones. Whatever it was, Teddy was addicted to the freedom he found, fueled by irrational resentment and adrenaline.
He was sorted into Gryffindor and met his soon-to-be best mate, Caspian Lewis on the train that day. He too, was sorted into the lions den and the two made fast friends, influencing each other for better or ill, getting into and out of trouble. And there were classes to consider; where Remus had taken his studies very seriously, Teddy found studying got in the way of his adventures and good times, and, besides, the only thing he was any good at was transfiguration anyway. So maybe he wasn't trying to find out what it meant to be a Lupin, after all. Maybe he was
redefining it.
By Teddy's fourth year, the first of his god-cousins had joined him at Hogwarts. Victoire, still his very first best friend, was sorted into Ravenclaw and that was kind of a bummer, but Teddy still made time to see her and his friends found it a little weird that he should spend so much time with a first year. But they weren't talking a few years later, when Vic hit her growth spurt and her Veela blood came out in full force. Who was that pretty girl?
Well she didn't look fourteen, that was for sure. Teddy, no stranger to the mistakes teenagers make, compelled by lust and hormones and perhaps stupidity, was looking at Victoire in a different light. And maybe it was wrong, to see his best friend, his dearest friend, like this. Maybe it was wrong that she was still young. But she wasn't exactly innocent herself, and Teddy was never one to say no. In her fourth year and in his final one, they clicked. He knew there would never be anyone else for him, ever, even if he was only just eighteen. Maybe it was wrong. Or maybe, it was so, so right.
Teddy graduated that year, forced now to face the working world and godfather he had never fully come to terms with. He got a job at Madam Puddifoot's (with Cas's mum, haha) to stay close to Vic and to get away from any type of Ministry job. He knew, even if Harry never came right out and said it, that Harry expected him to consider auror training, like his mum before him. He probably would have been excellent at it, too, an ace at disguises and everything. Teddy, however, wanted nothing to do with anything that would attach himself to Harry. He was a Lupin, remember? He wasn't Harry's son, he didn't have to follow in his footsteps. And sure, maybe his mother and father had been aurors. Maybe they were disappointed he never went in for training, too. But this was his life, he decided. Free from anyone's expectations, be they his dead parent's, his grandmother's, or his god-family's. It was selfish, he knew, but it was something he had to do. He had to do it for himself, or be crushed under the weight of his guilt. Teddy was in too deep, now. Teddy was too far gone.
He shared a flat with Caspian for a brief interim before finding his own place in London. Still unable to come to terms with feelings buried inside him, about his own father, about Harry, about his family, Teddy refused to deal with those thoughts just yet. He instead bided his time, working jobs whenever he could get them and saving his money for nothing in particular... Or at least, what he though was nothing, until the night Victoire graduated.
There was, of course, a huge family party for the newest Hogwarts graduate, and Teddy, now twenty-one, was of the attendees. Victoire, eighteen, was the center of attention and it was hard to steal a moment with her, but he managed it, and two very important, life-changing events occurred, both of which forced Teddy to grow the hell up and deal with his own selfishness. The first of these events, was a simple proposal - Teddy asked Victoire to come live with him, straight away. It was agony waiting for her to graduate, going without seeing her for so long, only managing a few meetings through Hogsmeade weekends. She agreed which completely thrilled Teddy, and, of course, led to life-changing even number two.
It happened that night, in fact, though they weren't aware until a few weeks later. Victoire was pregnant with Teddy's child, and everything,
everything changed after that.
Looking back, it was probably the most turbulent time of Teddy's life. He wouldn't trade it, of course, for anything, because it made him who he is, and he's proud of what he and Victoire have become. Telling Bill and Fleur was the hardest part, because Bill had no claims to Teddy's guardianship and didn't feel the need to restrain his reprimands. Bill was out for blood, and he wasn't about to blame his baby girl Victoire. Teddy's still not sure if he's made it back on Bill's good side.
Telling Harry and the rest of his god-family was another matter entirely. They weren't particularly proud of their actions, but they weren't about to stop supporting them, either. They were family, after all, and that's what families did. But there were other expectations... One comes prominently to mind, and it involves a couple of rings, some cheesy harp music and a couple of "I do"s.
Teddy... wasn't so sure about that.
He loved Victoire to death, admired her, was proud of her, practically worshiped her. But there was something on his mind, and he didn't want to burden her with how badly he realized he'd screwed things up. He needed to clear the air, get his own head on straight, starting thinking clearly again and acting responsibly again, before he felt ready to propose to her.
Unfortunately, that took three years. Teddy's good at holding grudges. Even fake, unfounded ones.
In the meantime, Teddy had to find a new job, one that would support his growing family. With Vic on maternity leave from St. Mungo's where she was training to be a healer, Teddy had to find something a bit more reliable than busing tables and serving tea. Caspian mentioned the EMCC where he had starting working only a month or two prior, and Teddy leaped at the chance. There, he found out Fo Spader, Victoire's best friend, was to be his boss, and that just made things all kinds of weird. Vastly more pleasant than angsting about money and family and everything, but still just... Really weird.
Three years later, Teddy was established in his job, Olivia was a rambunctious toddler, and things were great. Really excellent, in fact. So excellent, Teddy decided that now, before Olivia got any older or before he dug his grave any deeper, it was time he had a
talk with Harry. He laid his feelings out on the table, all the resentment, guilt, shame, everything... And Harry accepted him. He still loved him. And Teddy felt like an incredible fool for waiting for so long to deal with all his personal hells. But now... With that clear and weight of all that guilt off his shoulders...
"Victoire, will you marry me?" [/ul]
