Blast his family, his mother, and Rory. Blast his Grandmum, chores, and the muggle alarm clocks that his dad and his Grandapa used. Blast every person who was a morning person and who liked to get up early. All of these kind of irritated thoughts swirled through Al's head as he pushed back the hangings around his bed and rubbed at his eyes. What with waking up early all the time at home, and the burrow, and having Rory or his roommate wake him up, Al had, along the way, developed an internal alarm clock. So right now it was just a little before dawn, the sky gray, and the messy haired young man was almost fully awake and had no hope of getting back to sleep.
So, having nothing better to do, he had gotten dressed into his school uniform, robes and all, and had just been lacing up his shoes when he heard thumping echoing lightly up from the steps. With a small grin and a shake of his head, he realized that Rory must have been awake, and so he grabbed his broom, knowing that she would be heading out for some more practice on the Quidditch pitch. Fully dressed, and not fully awake, Al snuck out of his dorm and down the steps towards the common room.
Just as he neared the bottom, he heard a louder thump and he peeked around the opening into the common room to see Rory lying face down on the ground. And a few feet away was Soren, who laughed and went to help Rory up. Practically snickering to himself, Al was about to step out into the common room when he saw Rory's face change--a nervous look came upon it, and he saw a tiny flash of yellow as she went to sit next to Soren on the couch, their backs to Al now.
He quickly drew his head back in, eyes widening as he flattened himself against the wall. Rory had been nervous around the bloke...this brought a painful thought to his mind. Would it be possible...could it be...was the person that Rory was crushing on, the person that she was keeping from him, Soren Finnigan? Not wanting to interupt if it was, he cautiously poked his head out again and watched the two of them, Rory still acting nervous and keeping her gaze from Soren.
It was with bated breath and wide eyes that Al witnessed everything. Somehow, his eyes got even wider when Rory ended up basically asking the older boy out. So it...it was Soren! For the love of Merlin, she wanted to date a boy two years older than her?! Imediately, Al's temper flared, and he felt his stomach clench, his neck heating up. Trying not to grind his teeth in anger, he watched as Soren toyed with her, which caused him to just grow angrier--but still he remained in the shadows, until finally the boy asked out Rory and she...she accepted.
"Oh bloody hell," Al whispered to himself, before hurrying back up the stairs, staying silent the whole way. He felt practically sick to his stomach as he moved back into his dorm, threw himself onto his bed, and closed the hangings around his body. Sitting indian style, he closed his eyes and took deep, calming breaths, his mind whirring over what had just happened.
He had just witnessed his best friend hook up with a boy two years older than her! While a part of him was happy that she was getting what she had wanted, the rest of his body was boiling angry. And yet...he didn't even understand why this should anger him so much. Rory was crushing on Soren, and now the two were going to date--and if she had to pick a bloke, Soren was a good one to choose. So what was it that was making Al's neck flush, his stomach clench, his face contort in anger and pain?
Ten minutes later he was calm again, now lying on his bed with his broom across his stomach, still fully dressed. He was no longer as angry, just rather confused. He didn't understand what had just happened--but he passed it off as him being protective, just because Soren was older. While he didn't like the age difference, he forced himself to whisper aloud that Soren was a very good choice for Rory--that the two would get along great, and that Al was happy for her.
It wouldn't be until much later that Al would realize that his extreme emotions had been the awakening of the monster in his chest that would plauge him for months to come. Yes, jealousy was a very ugly thing...
