There was a pause.
She was pausing.
She was pausing?!
Oh god.
Oh god.
Oh. God.
Teddy's heart beat so fast he was sure his body wouldn't be able to take it anymore. It would pump too fast and wear out, and there he'd be, a crumpled heap at the feet of his dearest love while he waited for her to answer, while he... while he read entirely too much into the one beat of silence that passed between them.
But a lot can happen in a beat. She could make her mind to say no. She could say that eh, she's perfectly happy living the way they'd been living, and that he should keep his archaic, romantic ideas of matrimony to his idealistic self. The only thing that tied them at that point was a piece of legal paper, right? Maybe she'd think Teddy was being old fashioned. Maybe she'd think that she was too young to be a "wife" yet, and that being called "Mrs." would age her. The honorary title, the tag, that damnable "Mr. and Mrs." on the thank you cards. Maybe it was too much for her.
Oh, my god, Teddy. Calm yourself.
But he couldn't help the tenseness in his fingers, the way the corners of his eyes pulled tight in a worried frown Vic couldn't see as she gazed at the ring in the box. She'd say yes, right? Isn't this what she wanted? It was something he'd had on his mind since the moment Vic stepped foot off the scarlet engine for the last time, since she agreed to live with him the night of her graduation party. He'd wanted to ask her so, so many times. It was simple enough. He loved her. He loved her so that it was a miracle he could survive the workday without seeing her. One hour, one minute, one second apart from her was torture, and even when they fought he knew he was only falling more in love with her. So maybe it was ok for him to be romantic and like the idea of being tied to her in this way. It seemed more... concrete.
Like sharing a flat and raising a kid together wasn't enough, or something.
Teddy swallowed quietly, trying to force his heart out of his throat and back into his aching chest. He shivered against her as his body began to heat up, the blood pumping so quickly through his veins that he was afraid he'd melt. At the same moment, he heard Vic breathe in like she was going to say something, and his heart hitched again, waiting.
"Teddy, I..."
And then she paused again.
Oh god...
Teddy's eyes went a brilliant yellow then, like a highlighter bleeding into his irises and staining them with their neon color. Though he held her gently, lovingly, in his bare arms, he couldn't hide the way he shrugged up his shoulders against her next words...
"Yeah."
He was pretty sure his heart exploded just then.
"Yes, of course, oui, si, however the hell you want me to say it. Yes!"
"Yeah's just fine," Teddy managed somehow, his shoulders relaxing and his face breaking out into a smile bright enough to shame the moon. What he felt... He couldn't ever describe it. The girl he'd known since her birth, who he'd grown up with and fought and played and studied with, the girl he'd kissed a thousand, thousand times, each time like it was their first... That girl had said yes. And all Teddy could think of was... why hadn't he gotten over himself and asked sooner?
She was kissing him then, her fingers wrapped tightly in his hair, and automatically Teddy bent down to kiss her back. His arms wrapped effortlessly around her waist and he smiled through their kiss, too happy to keep it back. "I love you," he breathed somewhere amidst their lips dancing over skin, and again and again he said it. He wouldn't ever stop.
He wouldn't ever have to, now.
