ruthie smiled and leaned into the second kiss, this one less gentle, this one full of more emotion. less hesitance. ruthie found it odd, how she could go from lonely and liking it, to the opposite in under an hour's time. the tables turned in ruthie's mind, and she felt like a morning glory blooming for the first time, in the afternoon while most others had already shriveled up again. and it seems as if she found another belated glory, right where she least expected it. well, ruthie couldn't say she didn't enjoy it. her heart beat swiftly in her chest, and she couldn't remember the last time it was beating so fast. it fluttered, happy like a butterfly on a spring day.
louis's head rested itself in the crook of her neck, and she found herself grinning at his words. she liked the way her name sounded in his just-slightly-french accent. she listened, his voice a mutter that she had to strain to hear. it wasn't that hard, the room was so silent. in fact, the hallway's noises seemed to dim out of her ears for that moment. all she heard was him. don't tell me this is too good to be true. don't ever go away... those words touched ruthie deep in her fluttering heart, and she placed a hand on the back of louis's head, smiling. "i won't." she repsonded with those simple two words to both questions. she wouldn't tell him it was too good to be true. she wouldn't go away. she'd stay right here. well, metaphorically speaking. the moment of silence between them dragged on, comfortably. ruthie was still smiling, her heart still fluttering and her brain still whizzing around. her stomach growled. her brow knitted together and she bit her lower lip, chuckling slightly. "oh dear."

"I won't," she answered simply, and Louis could hear the smile in her words. It made him relax, his fingers fitting comfortably into place on her neck, like he should have been holding her like this all their lives. His breathing deepened into something comfortable and wonderful, something that made the rest of the world melt away and a blanketing silence envelope them both. He had never before felt more at ease, or more excited at the same time.
"Oh, dear," Ruthie complained suddenly, a small growling from her stomach making Louis laugh and sit up. He'd been selfish, he'd realized, jeopardizing her time when any normal person would be eating. He shrugged an apology and stood, holding his hand out to her. "Should we go eat, then?" His lips twitched to a small smile and the careful tilt of his head suggested he'd really rather be doing other things than eating, but things were going fast enough as is. He didn't need to freak her out any more than he had, or freak himself out for that matter.
Really, he'd never been so involved with a girl he'd know for such a short time. Hardly an afternoon together and already rounding first base? Unless he was drunk or feeling particularly... hormonal... things like that just didn't happen. So he wanted to be careful with Ruth. Or, that was the goal, at any rate. But old habits die hard and it was all Louis could do to keep one hand in his pocket and the other holding hers, instead of tangled desperately in her hair or holding the small of back. He breathed in a couple times to shake the pulse-quickening image from his head.
Don't get so ahead of yourself, he prompted in his head, weaving their fingers together as they headed for the door. Pleading with himself, he begged to not have this end like most other relationships he'd been in. A discrediting reputation pegged him as a bit of a "player," with all the usual implications. But hey, you try controlling veela blood when it pulses in your vain. Pretty impossible. And he only a smidge of the veela genes anyway.
Hormones and DNA aside, Louis just wanted something solid for once, and Ruthie, this quiet but by no means shy girl was perhaps the one to give him that stability. An undeniable connection and emotions only the two of them were privvy to apparently happened to be just what the doctor ordered.
