He could tell that Rory wasn't thrilled with the fact that he was still ill at Soren, but Albus couldn't do anything more than promise to try and stay civil. Al knew that he couldn't expect her to understand, of course, because she didn't even really know the whole reason why he was so angry with the seveth year. Sure, Rory was his best friend and he hated seeing her hurt, and so Soren going and breaking her heart had been a thing that really riled him up. She also probably figured that he was more angry than usual after Malfoy Manor, although Al was sure nobody could ever understand how bad his anger problem really was. There was one thing that Rory couldn't know, though, and it was the thing that fueled Al's anger most.
It was the fact that Al had became quite smitten with the girl who was standing in front of him, clapping erasers. Albus Potter, practically (and quite probably, although he couldn't understand it yet) in love with Rory Blake. Maybe other people that knew the two of them might have guessed this happening, but never Al. Sure, he had known for a while that plenty of people fell in love with their best friends, but he had never thought of that happening to him and Rory. And in his mind, he doubted Rory would even give that notion a thought.
Since Al was practically positive that there was no way for Rory to like him the way he felt about her, he knew that she wouldn't understand why he had done what he did fully--not that he would tell her anyways. It hadn't just been because Rory was his best friend that he had been angry--furious, even. It was because Al had had to sit there and watch as Rory and Soren snogged, and slowly felt his insides burn up in jealousy and sorrow as he came to terms that he was quite smitten. What boy wouldn't be angry, then, when the person of their affection had their heart broken by some git who never deserved her? And it was even over his and Rory's friendship, which was quite a low blow.
Albus blinked hard, bringing himself back to the present as a cloud of dust took over the room, and he felt the corners of his lips twitch at the sight of Rory caught in the chalk, coughing and eyes watering. He felt a swooping feeling in his stomach at the sight of her eyes, the color magnified by the moisture that had formed there. He shook his head forcefully, though, and resumed the clapping of the erasers he held. It took a moment to realize that these two were already clean, and feeling embarrassed and flustered, Al tossed them away and got a new pair. It was then that Rory turned to him, frowning.
His face registered a bit of shock at Rory's words at first, but after a moment of getting berated for trying to put some blame on himself, Al felt a tiny smile take over his face, while at the same time he felt another tug in his stomach. She was trying to blame herself, which he didn't like one bit, but the last part about Soren was true. He couldn't handle their friendship...but of course, Rory didn't understand that maybe it really was partly Al's fault. He didn't exactly want this to stay a friendship only, after all, so what if they had been...been flirting or something? And neither of them noticed? After a pause, Al gave a tiny nod, and was about to open his mouth to say something to Rory when he heard the all too familiar cackle and turned to look at Peeves also.
His words made Al's bright green eyes flash, while at the same time his neck reddened. Love birds? His pet? Al's jaw clenched as anger pulsed in his stomach, probably more anger than was called for in the situation. He didn't seem to be the only one, though, who was dealing with anger at the little menace. He watched in amazement as Rory took a handful of stink pellets to the head and then chucked an eraser, which Peeves was just slightly too quick for. His smile from before fell as he watched Rory kick at a desk and speak furiously about wanting to actually hit him. Peeves must have really done something to tick her off...
"I'm sure you will," Al said soothingly, taking a deep breath to try and rid the feeling of anger from his body. He shifted both of his erasers to one hand and moved over to his friend, gently combing a stink pellet from her red hair. He bent a bit to smile at her, before picking out another stink pellet and chucking it out the window, which he had slightly cracked. "You're aim's gotten really good, he's just a quick little devil. One of these times he'll slip up, though, and then you'll have him."
Al smiled at her again, before moving a safe distance away and clapping his two erasers. He waited until a lot of his cloud of dust had cleared before continuing, "And...you're right. It's not my fault. And it's not your fault either. When you started dating Soren he...he seemed like a good guy. Well...I mean I guess he is. He's alright." His smile became a bit more forced at this point, but at least he didn't sound sarcastic and rude--Soren was actually a pretty good guy, besides the whole breaking Rory's heart thing. He glanced at her and shrugged, as if to say 'told you I would try and be civil'.
